The one thing that holds the day together

Running

Slow miles, mostly before six in the morning, mostly around Yogyakarta. Not for performance, not really for health. Running is just running.

341.9km so far in 2026, over 90 runs
127.6km in the same stretch of 2025
944km in 2021, my best year
1:02best 10K, which I will now defend forever

As of , from the log.

I run alone, early, while the city is still quiet. Not for performance and not really for health, though I’ll take it. Running is just running. It’s easy and it’s hard. It’s the one thing I look forward to when I close my eyes at night, and the first thing I negotiate my way out of when the alarm goes.

When the run happens, the whole day works. When I start with the phone instead, everything goes downhill from there. I have known this for about ten years. It hasn’t stopped me checking the phone first.

What I wanted in 2022, kept as a public record of my optimism:

  • Run earlier: 5:17 in the morning.
  • Never get injured.
  • Understand the mechanics of running.
  • A new course every month.
  • 42 km twice, 21 km four times.
  • 10 km a day for seven days in a row.

I managed some of these. I’m not saying which.

The live log is where my phone posts every run as it happens. It’s very honest, which is more than I can say for my memory.

Race log

  1. The Kraton Marathon (of one)

42 km Inside the Kraton walls, Yogyakarta

No race, no crowd, no medal. Up at 3:30, loops inside the Kraton walls, the family car parked as a water station. Legs gave out at km 31. Ran the last 11 km after dinner. It counts. I’ve decided it counts. The whole story.

  2. Volcano Run 2020

    21 km Merapi, Yogyakarta

3:45, my third half marathon. It rained like hell, and from km 5 to 10 the Merapi mist came down and made the whole thing feel like a dream. I said I would come back the next year. Then 2020 happened.

  3. Waduk Sermo 2019

    21 km Sermo, Yogyakarta

Proof that it is idiotic to train once in a month and then put your shoes on for a half marathon. Cramps from km 15, repeated somewhere between ten and fifteen times before the finish. It took a month to recover.

  4. Adi Sutjipto Obstacle Run 2019

    13 km Adisutjipto, Yogyakarta

Mud, swamp, river, barbed wire, a hole in the ground, gravel, sand, chalk. I paid money for this.

  5. Ambarrukmo Vertical Run

    10 km Ambarrukmo, Yogyakarta

1:02. My best 10K so far. Finished strong even with the sun scorching Yogyakarta, which I mention because it rarely happens twice.

  6. Volcano Run 2019

    21 km Merapi, Yogyakarta

My first 21K. It was fun, which I now realise is the most suspicious thing you can say about a first half marathon.
